Description from the seller
Exceptional Antique Louis XVI Mantel Clock (Pendule) – Josephinian Neoclassical Style – Masterfully Hand-Carved Solid Wood Case
An outstanding example of Historicist woodcarving, where the clock movement forms part of an almost sculptural work of art.
This remarkable mantel clock combines masterful woodcarving with the refined elegance of the Louis XVI style. Its richly relief-carved solid wood case, featuring an elaborate Allegory of Music, elevates the piece far beyond its function as a timekeeper, making it a distinguished decorative artwork of exceptional craftsmanship.
Offered here is an impressive antique mantel (console) clock in the elegant Louis XVI (Josephinian Neoclassical) style, representing a level of craftsmanship that clearly surpasses the ordinary examples of its period.
The case, crafted entirely from solid wood, has been carved from a single solid block (frontside), demonstrating extraordinary artistic skill. The remarkable depth of the relief carving, the sculptural modelling and the exceptional attention to detail reveal the considerable effort and talent of the master woodcarver. The harmonious architectural design, balanced proportions and outstanding execution give this clock an impressive and dignified presence. Its beautifully aged original patina further enhances its timeless appeal.
The richly ornamented case is adorned with finely carved floral garlands, blossoms and foliage.
Particularly noteworthy is the iconographic composition on the front. At its centre is a stylised stringed instrument, reminiscent of a viol, lute or oud, flanked by crossed shawms. This carefully executed composition represents the classical Allegory of Music, adding cultural significance and artistic symbolism to the clock while setting it apart from the predominantly floral decoration commonly found on comparable examples.
The elegant silhouette, elaborately carved scrollwork, laurel swags and richly ornamented side panels combine architecture and sculpture into a harmonious composition of remarkable decorative quality.
More than the movement itself, it is the exceptional quality of the carved wooden case that makes this pendule a rare collector's piece of fine craftsmanship.
The mechanical key-wound movement is in working order. No maker's signature or manufacturer's mark could be identified on either the movement or the case, which is not uncommon for high-quality cabinetmaker-produced clocks of this period.
Condition
Mechanical movement in working order.
Beautifully preserved solid wood case with an attractive age-related patina.
Exceptionally crisp and finely executed relief carving.
Dial in very good condition with minor age-related signs of wear.
Overall condition is entirely consistent with the age of the piece and underlines its authenticity.
The pendulum clock is in working order. To preserve it, and because it is located in a bedroom, it is currently not being run (regularly). Following any transport, a readjustment and fine-tuning at the new location are recommended – as is standard practice for antique pendulum clocks of this type.
