Description from the seller

Extremely RARE antique Greek icon with selected saints from the first half of the 19th century (see photos).

The saints depicted are St. Kosmas and St. Domician. In the center is probably St. Semjon portrayed. This is a commissioned icon.

The icon is dated 1836 (see photos).

Hand-painted with egg tempera colors or oil on a wooden panel with a chalk ground. A typical method of icon painting in Greece during the 18th and 19th centuries (in imitation of the Russian Orthodox Church).

The subject is relatively rare and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

The painting is executed in great detail (see photos).

Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic scribbles/gnaws (see photos).

Especially expressive and striking are the faces of the saints (see photos). The saints are labeled. The inscriptions are partly difficult to read.

Stable and solid wooden panel, which however has a vertical crack (see photos).

The icon is in good condition with typical numerous age-related signs of wear, which have been professionally addressed/restored (see photos).

All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.

Dimensions: 31 x 25 x 2 cm
