Russian multi-panel icon with the Twelve Great Feasts and the Resurrection of Christ – 19th century
Authentic Russian multi-panel icon, hand-painted in tempera on wood with a gilded background, dating from the 19th century. At the center is the depiction of the Resurrection of Christ (Anastasis), in which Christ descends into the underworld and redeems Adam and Eve – one of the most important motifs of Orthodox iconography.
The central scene is framed by the Twelve Great Feasts (Dodekaorton), the most important events of the liturgical year. The depicted scenes include, among others:
* Nativity of the Theotokos
* Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple
* Annunciation
* Nativity of Christ
* Baptism of Christ
* Transfiguration
* Entry into Jerusalem
* Crucifixion
* Resurrection of Christ
* Ascension
* Dormition of the Theotokos
* Exaltation of the Cross
The fine craftsmanship, the luminous colors, and the original preserved gilding give the icon a striking radiance. The Church Slavonic inscriptions conform to traditional Russian Orthodox iconography.
