Episcopal ciborium in gilt silver with amethyst cabochons – Edmond Lesage, Paris, late 19th century
Important episcopal ciborium in vermeil silver richly adorned with amethyst cabochons bezel-set on the domed cover, the knop and the pedestal. The interior cup is entirely gilt according to liturgical usage. The domed lid is topped with a trilobed Latin cross.
The knop and the foot repeat a rhythmic decoration of amethysts in polylobed carved surrounds, evoking the episcopal symbolism of liturgical violet.
Under the foot is an engraved inscription reading “Monseigneur de Grammont”, indicating episcopal destination.
