Description from the seller
Large white marble altar consecration slab—with reliquary cavity and sealed relic—France or Papal States, 19th century
Veined white marble liturgical plaque, engraved with the date 1893 and adorned with five consecration crosses finely sculpted in shallow relief. This type of stone was traditionally integrated into a consecrated altar, the five crosses recalling the five wounds of Christ and the anointing points made during the rite of dedication.
The lower portion features a cavity intended to receive the relics prescribed during the altar’s consecration, sealed with a religious red wax seal. The seal, although showing normal wear, is still in place and constitutes an important element of authenticity.
Dimensions: 40 cm x 40 cm
Condition: Beautiful liturgical wear, surface slightly scratched, some old chips, very beautiful mineral patina
