Description from the seller
Baroque altarpiece fragment - Carved and gilded wood - 18th century - Spain Description: An exceptional ornamental pierced fragment belonging to the architecture of a religious altarpiece or main altar of the Spanish school of the 18th century (full Baroque period). The piece has been entirely handcrafted with gouge and gouge-cutting on solid wood, achieving vegetal volumes and fleshy forms with great relief and visual dynamism. The front features its original burnished gilding set on a traditional plaster-stucco base, showing a natural wear that is very aesthetic along the edges, subtly exposing the underlying preparation. The design stands out for its profuse opposing volutes, Rococo-influenced asymmetrical Rocaille, and acanthus leaves, generating an elegant play of light and shadow through pierced work. The rear zone preserves the original exposed wood, flat but irregular, with evident leveling marks from period tools (azuela), accumulating a genuine patina of dust and candle soot from historical use. It bears remnants of dark polychromy on the contours due to its ancient architectural setting. A discreet modern hanger has been added at the top to facilitate immediate wall display. A singular collectible piece, with very high decorative potential for high-period interior design projects or as a freestanding wall sculpture.
Dimensions 85 cm x 36 cm x 10 cm
