Per Strada brings together photographs made by Guido Guidi from 1980 to 1994, along the Via Emilia – an ancient Italian road connecting Milan with the Adriatic Sea, which passes close to Guidi's home. To this day, the Via Emilia is the territorial backbone of the Southern tier of the Po Valley, running through mid-size cities such as Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, Forlì, and Rimini. Using an 8x10 inch camera, Guidi directs his lens towards the “interstices” between cities rather than on historical centres. His three-volume book charts a rich palimpsest of signs in the landscape built from centuries of residential, agricultural, industrial, and commercial activity.
Guidi’s project on the Via Emilia began in the environs of his hometown, Cesena. For the Italian artist, photographing everyday landscapes is a way to acknowledge the importance of the vernacular, but also to break free from one’s own stereotypes, ideas, and constraints. As he has stated, “At a certain moment I felt pushed to leave my room, like in Wim Wenders’s film ‘The Wrong Move’ (1975), when Wilhelm breaks the windowpane with the palm of his hand and leaves the house. I leave the house and what do I find? A house, an entrance door, a woman who passes by or who asks me something.”
Photographs from this book were partly published in a book made in collaboration with Luigi Ghirri and edited by Guidi, Due fotografi per il Teatro Bonci (1983). The body of work continued with individual and collective projects, including the 1986 group exhibition Esplorazioni sulla Via Emilia.
Guido Guidi (b. 1941, Cesena, Italy) lives and works in Cesena. His work, spanning over more than 40 years, has focused on rural and suburban landscapes in Italy and Europe. Guidi’s photographs have been exhibited extensively, including at Fotomuseum Winterthur (2014); Venice Biennale (2004); Canadian Centre for Architecture (2001); Guggenheim Museum, New York (1994); and Centre Pompidou, Paris (1989), among other institutions. He has published numerous books, including Guardando A Est (Walther Konig, 2015 ); Veramente (MACK, 2014) Preganziol (MACK, 2013); A New Map of Italy (Loosestrife, 2011); and Due fotografi per il Teatro Bonci (co-authored by Luigi Ghirri, 1983), among other titles. Since 1986 Guidi has taught photography at various Italian universities, and since 2001 he has been a visiting professor at the IUAV, Venice.

Dartbooks is a specialized photography bookshop based in Barcelona, dedicated to photobooks, rare and out-of-print editions, and historically significant publications. With a strong focus on Japanese photography, Dartbooks was founded to provide continuity to a field that requires depth, expertise, and careful curation.
The bookshop was established after the closure of Kowasa, a landmark reference for photography books in Spain. Its disappearance left a clear gap for photographers, collectors, and institutions in need of a space with a serious and knowledgeable approach to the photobook. Dartbooks emerged in response to that need, not as a replacement, but as part of the natural evolution of a cultural ecosystem.
Dartbooks operates with a curatorial mindset, shaped by long-term engagement with photography and book collecting. The project functions as a book hunting platform for collectors, professionals, and libraries worldwide, and also provides advisory support to other bookshops seeking to develop coherent and specialized photography collections.
The catalogue includes new publications, rare and out-of-print titles, monographs, retrospectives, self-published works, signed copies, and editions produced directly by photographers through their own imprints. The selection reflects a sustained commitment to photography as a form of visual narration, where images construct meaning beyond text.
Although rooted in the Gràcia neighbourhood of Barcelona, Dartbooks serves an international audience. Its community includes collectors, professionals, and institutions from France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and beyond, both through the physical space and the online platform.
Dartbooks understands the photobook not merely as an object of consumption, but as a cultural artifact that documents artistic practices, historical contexts, and personal visions.
