Among the Yoruba of the southwest of Nigeria, four times as many twins are born as the global average. This fact, coupled with high infant mortality, led to the emergence of a unique culture of twins. For each deceased twin baby, a small wooden statuette, called an « ere ibeji », was carved so that its spirit could endure.

This statuette was carefully cared for and, in return, it brought health and prosperity to the family. Through the lens of Jean-Pierre Depienne and the pen of Bruno Claessens, the 32 ere ibeji from the private collection of Dos and Bertie Winkel are presented for the first time in book form.

After an introductory text on the subject, the great variety of styles of this specific African art is described in detail. Full-page color photographs bring these intriguing works to life and tell the story behind these wooden figurines.

Through the lens of Jean-Pierre Depienne and the scholarly prose of Bruno Claessens, the 32 Ibeji of the private Dos and Bertie Winkel collection are unveiled for the first time in this volume. After a richly documented introduction to the subject, an in-depth analysis explores the wide diversity of styles characteristic of this singular African art, offering the reader a more nuanced and exhaustive understanding of these Yoruba sacred sculptures. This study highlights not only the aesthetic finesse but also the cultural and spiritual significance of these objects in African tradition. This volume is remarkable for its rich iconography and in particular the detail views of each ibeji presented. The stylistic analysis, focusing on regional differences in anatomical representation, as well as the meaning of the various beads and ornaments used, constitutes an innovative approach that will appeal to both beginner collectors and seasoned connoisseurs.
