Description from the seller
GENERAL:
Volkswagen Beetle Oval Sunroof from 1959. This is a very special unit that originally sold in Switzerland through the prestigious dealer AMAG. This official importer included an identifying numbered plate on every car it marketed, a valuable historical detail that this unit still preserves today. The car arrived in Spain in the 1960s and was definitively registered in Valencia in 1967.
Historical information and model context: The Volkswagen Beetle with oval rear window (produced between 1953 and 1957 in its standard factory configuration, although some late or customized units are dated in later years) represents one of the purest and most sought-after eras of the "Beetle." The term "Oval" is revered by enthusiasts due to the aesthetic transition it marked from the previous Split Window. The Swiss distributor AMAG (Automobil- und Motoren AG), founded by Walter Haefner, was not only the key Volkswagen importer in Switzerland but also played a crucial role in the postwar period by ensuring very high quality standards and even assembling some special models locally. The presence of the original AMAG plate adds immense historical value and provenance to this vehicle.
BODYWORK AND PAINT:
The body has been fully restored and presents a beautiful blue-and-white two-tone combination. Aesthetically, its iconic oval rear window stands out, giving it an unmistakable retro look, as well as the distinctive arrow-shaped side turn signals ("semáforos") and the coveted original canvas sunroof. During the restoration process, numerous exterior parts were replaced with new ones, such as the chrome hubcaps and the side steps, among other details.
MECHANICS:
In the mechanical department, this example is fitted with a rebuilt AB-code engine from 1973. This block significantly improves cooling and increases the original power to 44 HP. Thanks to the introduction of a dual-port intake head, an improved carburetor, and optimized lubrication and cooling systems, the car offers a substantial increase in performance, handling, and reliability on the road compared to 1950s engines. As a contemporary usability improvement, this unit has been updated to include an alternator in place of the original dynamo. It is noteworthy that this reliable engine block, with very few changes, was the one that powered the Beetle until the end of its production in Germany in 1979, and subsequently in Mexico until 2003.
INTERIOR:
The Beetle’s cabin has been completely restored and reupholstered. It presents a bright light color finish that perfectly complements the elegant two-tone exterior paint, offering a clean, classic, and very welcoming atmosphere.
DOCUMENTATION:
The vehicle comes with its corresponding Spanish documentation after being imported in the 1960s and historically registered in the province of Valencia in 1967, retaining its original license plate.
PICK-UP:
The vehicle is available for viewing, inspection, and collection in the town of Borox, province of Toledo, Spain.
OTHER INFORMATION:
This unit perfectly combines the pure and historical classic look of the late 1950s with the lively, reliable, and more usable mechanics of the 1970s, better suited for modern traffic today.

Disclaimer
Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
