Boch Frères - Raymond Chevallier - Vase - Shape 1489, Decor 5161 - Earthenware

Charming small Boch Frères Keramis vase, form 1489, coated with decoration 5161, produced during the period when Raymond Chevallier led the artistic department of the manufactory, in the years following Charles Catteau's departure. This creation perfectly illustrates Boch Frères Keramis' stylistic evolution toward a more streamlined Art Deco, where architecturally inspired forms inherited from the 1920s combine with a stylized floral decoration with delicately modernist accents.

The vase features a cylindrical silhouette that is slightly flared, resting on a molded foot. Two elegant handles in openwork scrolls, enhanced with rich gilding, frame the composition and confer a refined look to the whole. The decoration consists of a creme background entirely animated by small stylized red flowers, connected by thin ochre stems and surrounded by black and gray foliage treated with finesse. Two wide cobalt blue bands outline the lip and the lower part of the vase, each framed by gilded edges that highlight the piece's proportions. The overall effect is a particularly harmonious contrast between bold colors, the richness of the gilding, and the delicacy of the floral decor.

The vase is in very good condition. The glaze is glossy and the decoration is remarkably well preserved. The gilding shows only very light, sporadic wear, mainly on the handles and the edges, consistent with the age of the piece. A few fine superficial marks as well as a very discreet network of crazing are also visible, mainly from certain angles or inside the vase, with no impact on its solidity or presentation. No chips, cracks, or restorations were observed.

Founded in the mid-19th century in La Louvière, Boch Frères Keramis remains one of the most emblematic Belgian manufactories in the field of artistic ceramics. After Charles Catteau's departure in 1948, Raymond Chevallier continued the artistic development of the manufactory, evolving its decorative language toward creations where modernity is expressed through cleaner lines, elegant color palettes, and finely crafted decors. This vase, identified by form 1489 and decor 5161, is a fine example of this transitional period, bearing witness to Boch Frères Keramis' know-how and the artistic continuity that has marked the history of the Belgian manufactory.
