LATAM Airlines Chile, formerly LAN Chile and LAN Airlines, is a Chilean airline. The company has its hub at Santiago Airport and flies to destinations in the Americas, Oceania and Spain.[1]

LAN Airlines was merged with TAM Linhas Aéreas to form the LATAM Airlines Group.[2] Since then, both airlines have operated under the LATAM name, but remain independent.[3] The LATAM Airlines Group is the largest airline company in Latin America.[4] The company was a member of Oneworld from 2000 to 2020.[5]

History

Early years
The airline was founded by Chilean commodore Arturo Merino Benítez of the Chilean Air Force.[6] The Santiago airport is named after him.[7] On March 5, 1929, LATAM Chile began as Línea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica.[8] In 1932 a rebranding followed and the name Línea Aérea Nacional de Chile with the acronym LAN Chile was adopted.[9] On August 23, 1945, LAN Chile became a member of the newly established International Air Transport Association.

Privatization and internationalization
In September 1989, the Chilean government privatized the company by selling the state shares to Icarosan and the Scandinavian airline Scandinavian Airlines.[10] From 1994 the largest shareholders were members of the Cueto family and businessman Sebastián Piñera.[11] He became President of Chile in 2010 and sold his shares.[12] In 1998 LAN entered into a joint venture with Lufthansa named LLTT (Lufthansa-LAN Technical S.A.).[13] This allowed people to be trained for aircraft maintenance. LLTT was the only entity in Latin America that could offer A320 Maintenance Simulator (CMOS) trainings.[14]

In 2000 LAN Cargo opened an important base at Miami Airport and has one of its major cargo bases there. Subsequently, a new brand and color scheme were introduced in 2004.[15] LAN Chile was renamed LAN Airlines on 17 June 2004 and its subsidiaries LAN Perú, LAN Ecuador, LAN Dominicana and LAN Express were united under the name LAN.[15] An exception came in 2005 when LAN Airlines in Argentina established LAN Argentina.[16] This carrier operated domestic and international flights from Buenos Aires. On 28 October 2010 shares were taken in AIRES to later acquire it.[17] On 3 December 2011 the company was renamed LAN Colombia, the current LATAM Airlines Colombia.[18]

LATAM Airlines Group
On 22 June 2012 LAN and TAM Linhas Aéreas (TAM) decided to continue together under the name LATAM Airlines Group.[19] The first steps had already been taken on 13 August 2010.[20] In 2016 a rebranding was carried out for all components and the name LAN Airlines became LATAM Airlines Chile.[21] On 1 May 2020, the LATAM Airlines Group and thus LATAM Airlines Chile left Oneworld after Delta Air Lines made a multi-billion investment.[22]
