Turkman Antique Carpet – Origin & Features

Turkman carpets traditionally originate from the Turkmen, a Turkic-speaking nomadic people living mainly in Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. They are among the best-known nomadic carpets and are highly sought-after collectibles due to their distinctive patterns, deep colors, and history.

Characteristic features
Designs & Motifs:

The best-known pattern is the Göl – an octagonal, repeating medallion that served as an identifying mark for each tribe (e.g., Tekke-Göl, Yomut-Göl).

Frequently geometric borders and fine diamond- or hook motifs.

Many carpets have a continuous rug motif, sometimes with a central field and corners.

Colors:

Dominant red tones (madder red, wine red, rust)
Accent with black-brown, indigo, ivory
Natural colors from plant and mineral pigments

Materials & Technique:

Hand-spun wool (pile and warp)
Fine knots, often Persian Senneh knots (asymmetrical)
Dense knotting, robust yet supple
