Majolica asparagus dish / serving dish – WS&S – Bohemia – ca. 1890-1910 (Wilhelm Schiller & Son)
Special and decorative majolica asparagus dish in the shape of a spray of white asparagus, featuring realistically modeled asparagus heads in green and brown glaze accents. The perforated top dish was originally used to stylishly serve boiled asparagus and to drain excess moisture.
The dish is marked WS&S, with model number 7174 and a small decorators mark. On this basis the object is attributed to Wilhelm Schiller & Son (Bohemia), a renowned earthenware factory known around the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century for its high-quality majolica and realistically shaped tableware.
The heavy earthenware, refined modeling, and the lovely, glossy polychrome glazes make this a particularly collectible item and a decorative showpiece.
Condition: The dish is in a nice antique condition with normal signs of use and aging. There is a small chip on one of the asparagus points (see photos). In addition, the original undersaucer is probably missing, as is common with this type of serving dish. However, these flaws hardly detract from its decorative appearance.
A rare and atmospheric piece of majolica that fits well within a collection of antique tableware, Bohemian earthenware, or Art Nouveau/fin-de-siècle objects.
