Description from the seller

This is a remarkable Russian icon meticulously painted in three registers, reflecting the depth and richness of Orthodox Christian tradition. The upper register depicts the revered Mother of God of Kazan, surrounded by intricate and vivid halo and depicting additional saints, each rendered with expressive features and vibrant colors.

This rare and authentic Russian Orthodox Menaion (Menologion) icon dating from the 18th–19th century is painted in traditional egg tempera on a wooden panel with a gilded background. The composition is divided into nine panels, depicting some of the most venerated Orthodox saints and sacred subjects.

The icon features:

Upper register: Our Lady of Kazan with the Christ Child, the Deesis (Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist), and St. Nicholas.
Middle register: Archangel Michael with a sword, surrounded by Orthodox bishops, martyrs, and monastic saints.
Lower register: St. George slaying the dragon, St. Anastasia (or another early female martyr), and additional saints including St. Anthony.

A fine example of traditional Russian Orthodox icon painting, displaying the craftsmanship and devotional character typical of the period.

Condition: Excellent antique condition, with minor wear consistent with its age and long devotional use.
