Christofle - Serving tray - Silverplated

An exceptional and early Christofle silver-plated serving tray, dating to 1865, during the French Second Empire period.

This substantial tray measures approximately 52 cm in length and features an elaborate hand-engraved decoration of scrolling acanthus leaves, flowers and botanical motifs arranged symmetrically around a central cartouche. The elegant handles are integrated into the flowing outline of the tray, giving the piece a particularly refined and imposing appearance.

The reverse bears the CHRISTOFLE name, the early CC hallmark, the number 2189015, and the 65 mark. The early CC marking is associated with Christofle's 19th-century production and is consistent with the stated 1865 dating. Christofle used CC marks during this early period, before the later OC company marks.

Founded by Charles Christofle in Paris in 1830, Christofle became one of France's most prestigious manufacturers of silverware and pioneered industrial electroplating in France during the 19th century. By the Second Empire, the firm had achieved international recognition and supplied prestigious commissions, including services for Napoleon III.

The tray remains in good antique condition, with surface scratches, light wear and signs of use consistent with its approximately 160 years of age. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the condition description.
