This is an antique French cast-iron spit, also known as a 'tournebroche'. The mechanism was powered by a spring and was used to slowly roast meat over an open hearth. This type of item often dates from the 18th or 19th century and is sometimes sold with a accompanying crank and spit. A long metal spit of 85 cm is included.
