Description from the seller

The object in the image is a bronze adze head from the Bronze Age (likely a type of toe adze or edge adze), dating from around 1500 to 800 BCE. This type of tool and weapon was used across Europe and West Asia.

Characteristics of the object

Dimensions: (LxWxH) 13.7 x 5.3 x 4.4 cm
Weight: 508.4 grams

Condition: possibly broken at the rear / pedestal (this lot comes from a private collection)

Material: Cast bronze (an alloy of copper and tin).

Patina: The greenish and brown color on the surface is a natural oxidation layer (patina). This protects the metal and is characteristic of bronze that has lain in the ground for centuries.

Form: The object has a narrow shaft that tapers to a broad, fan-shaped or semicircular cutting edge. At the thicker end (the base) an arched wooden haft was originally attached.

Shipping method: this lot is excellently packaged and shipped via DHL or DPD through Catawiki’s Smart Shipping.
