From the mid-19th century, the first obscene daguerreotypes appear, which will inspire Gustave Courbet and his Origin of the World. Over the decades, this type of fervently sought-after images, but costly and offered “under the counter,” will become popular. At the same time, the timid and submissive academic models of the early shots disappear in favor of emancipated women, whose bold and provocative gaze does not hesitate to seize the eye of the photographer and of the voyeur. It is this epic, spanning 1850 to 1930, that Alexandre Dupouy proposes to tell us by revealing, following a thematic organization, a sharp and rigorous selection of more than 300 photographs devoted to unveiling the unjustly little-known talent of these anonymous artists and their complicit models in the authentic expression of their arrogant and libertine sexuality.
