Figure - Boeddha (Hotei) met kalebas - Suarhout

A traditional symbol of Hotei is often depicted with a thick belly, a broad smile, and attributes such as a large sack symbolizing the gathering of people’s sorrows and worries, to transform them into pure happiness and abundance. The walking stick (Yoke), the wooden staff or branch to which the sack is attached, represents the monk’s journeys and his detachment from a dwelling. A peach on the staff hangs a round fruit or calabash. This is a classic symbol for a long life, good health, and protection against disease.
