Offered: a beautiful museum-grade collection of over 100 antique, hand-painted porcelain marbles (China marbles).
This type of marble was mainly produced in Germany between 1860 and 1900 and is nowadays a beloved collector’s item. It is very rare to find a set of this size (100 small porcelain marbles plus several large blocks) in one purchase.
Special variations in the collection:
The marbles in this set are all hand-painted, which was a very meticulous task at the time. The collection contains several sought-after patterns and color combinations:
Plaid Chinas (Diamond pattern): Stunning examples in which multiple lines cross each other perpendicularly. Includes, among others, a rarer three-color Plaid with a combination of green, purple/blue, and red lines.
Helix Chinas (Spiral pattern): Marbles with crossing, diagonally diverging lines forming a spiral structure.
Lined Chinas (Concentric lines): The absolute base of the game, present in a brilliant palette of bright colors, including deep blue, grass green, turquoise, and classic red/pink.
Large Porcelain 'Boulders': A few large, rarer porcelain playing pieces (including a purple/red Helix/Plaid variant).
Bennington & Clay Marbles: As a historical bonus, the set also includes two brown-glazed Bennington clay marbles (with the well-known 'Bennington eyes') and an authentic, unglazed natural clay marble.
Condition:
The marbles are in a varied, well-played condition that suits their age of over a century. Some items show characteristic signs of intensive use (fading of glaze/pattern), while a large portion of the 100 small marbles still display strikingly bright colors and sharp lines. The wooden board has a beautifully aged patina with a deep groove around the edge.
