Picture frame - Gilt brass, glass micromosaic

An enchanting, precious and rare circular micromosaic and millefiori photo frame, datable to the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century (the full Grand Tour period).

The object measures approximately 16 cm in diameter (excluding the support feet) and is supported by a solid rear structure entirely made of gilded brass, equipped with an elegant, double-legged support stand with scroll-like terminals. The external perimeter is adorned with a contemporaneous twisted metal cord; the rear closure plate is missing.

The extraordinary and complex craftsmanship of this piece is revealed in the combination of very high-level artistic techniques. The composition is enclosed, on both the inner and outer edges, by a refined geometric border of small red, white and black triangles, created by letting the sections of millefiori protrude in relief. Inside, on a compact background of ultra-fine white vitreous tesserae laid brickwise, stands a richly three-dimensionally raised floral garland. The blue bouquets are masterfully composed of sections of millefiori millefiori in the shape of tiny flowers with a central pistil, set one by one, while the leaves are recreated with cut glass elements arranged at different heights. The branches emanating from the flowers are enhanced and bounded by thin, shaped metal blades.

The true rarity that distinguishes this frame from more common models is the upper medallion: a splendid lunette framing a seascape with a sailing boat, entirely executed in micromosaic. The tiles of the sea, the sky and the boat itself (including the side contours in a different color) are laid along perfectly curved and geometric lines, creating extraordinary painterly dynamism. A highly evocative depiction, typical of the very luxury souvenirs destined for the European aristocracy of the era.

The micromosaic is in excellent preserved condition, as clearly shown by the macro and detail photos: the integrity and stability of each individual tessera and millefioro are exceptional and the vitreous colors retain their original brilliance. The rear brass mounting is intact and solid; as is customary for these antique objects, the rear glass pane and the photo fastener are missing (easily restorable).

A small masterpiece of historical craftsmanship, perfect for collectors of Grand Tour items, Roman/Venetian micromosaics and fine antiques.
