Splendid and rare vintage painting box (Malkasten) in molded/laminated painted metal, produced by the historic and prestigious German company Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld & Co. of Düsseldorf (brand of excellence founded in 1862 by chemist Franz Schoenfeld, today known worldwide as LUKAS Künstlerfarben). The item retains its original embossed metal plaque (inside) with the producer and city inscription.
Authenticity guaranteed: The interior preserves the original metal dividing grid, designed to house the old godets (color blocks).
Historical charm: The inner lid shows evident and fascinating stratifications and color encrustations from the period. It was used directly by the artist as a palette to mix pigments. No solvents were used to remove them, so as to preserve the history of the piece intact.
Conditions: The item exhibits a beautiful patina of time ("lived-in") with widespread surface oxidation consistent with age and use in contact with water, but the structure is solid and free of through-holes. Front movable handle and original functioning snap closure (the wire seen on the handle was probably added a century ago for security of closure). Only one zipper is functional.
