Description from the seller
Roman Bronze Anthropomorphic Appliqué – 1st to 3rd Century AD
A Roman bronze appliqué modelled as a highly stylized human head, with an elongated rounded cranium, prominent projecting nose, deeply recessed eyes, compact mouth and a short neck forming the base. The simplified and somewhat abstract treatment of the facial features is characteristic of provincial Roman bronze work, in which human and divine heads were frequently employed as decorative fittings on furniture, chests, vessels or ceremonial equipment. The surface displays a substantial mottled green patina with darker mineral deposits, areas of encrustation and age-related wear, giving the piece a strong archaeological character.
Material: Bronze
Dimensions: 3.1 × 2.8 × 1.4 cm
Weight: 39.48 g
Provenance: Acquired in Germany. From a German private collection assembled during the 1980s.
