Napoleón III “Philosopher” Marble and Bronze Entreated Desk Clock, 19th Century – France
Splendid and very heavy Napoleon III desk clock made in black marble topped with patinated bronze, depicting a philosopher of the Ancient World with a book in his lap.

The clock’s structure is robust, comprising a large stepped base of black marble outlined with gilded bronze. Above, the figure of the thinker appears on the left and beside him, the clock proper. Clockwork machinery from Paris signed inside the case, on the movement. Also on the white dial appears “Graverand, Paris” and the street where this watchmaker’s shop was located. Simple hands that indicate Roman numerals. At the top of its case, ornaments in gilded bronze: books and olive leaves. In the far-right area, more symbolic elements alluding to the character’s importance, scrolls in bronze as well. It is worth noting that this marvelous clock rests on four feet, the front ones highly elaborate, animal claw-shaped with a rocaille form at the top.
