Description from the seller
CEYLON. 5 Rupees. 1957.
- Value: 5 Rupees.
- Year: 1957.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: FIVE RUPEES · 1957, together with legends in Sinhala and Tamil. Reverse: 2500, surrounded by animal and vegetal motifs evocative of the anniversary.
- Grade: MS62 (GBCA).
A 5 Rupee commemorative coin issued by Ceylon in 1957 to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of Buddhism, an event of great cultural and religious significance on the island. The obverse features an elaborate ornamental composition formed by inscriptions in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, integrated into a traditional-inspired symmetrical design that incorporates stylized vegetal elements. The reverse displays the number “2500” at the center, surrounded by a rich circular sequence of animals and decorative motifs inspired by ancient Sinhalese art, creating one of the most original designs in twentieth-century Asian commemorative numismatics.
The piece preserves an attractive visual appearance consistent with the MS62 grade, with full relief, still perceptible original luster, and a pleasant uniform silver tone. The fields show light contact marks typical of conservation in uncirculated condition, without detracting from the overall beauty of this emblematic issue dedicated to one of the most relevant religious commemorations in the Buddhist world.
