Signed Mimmo Jodice - Procida, [ A Mediterranean architecture ] - 1993

An exceptionally signed copy on the title page by Mimmo Jodice (1934-2025), unique and unavailable on the internet in a signed copy. 130 pages and 110 photographs by Mimmo Jodice, all printed full-page, of which 32 are in color. Texts in Italian by Toti Scialoja and Giancarlo Cosenza, and at the end of the book a text of an interview with the craftsman Maestro Alberto on the techniques and materials used for the construction of houses, vaults and stairs. Soft cover with flaps illustrated on the cover and on the back. In excellent condition.

The island of Procida, to which this book is exclusively devoted, is located in the Gulf of Naples, halfway toward the island of Ischia, and Mimmo Jodice photographed its landscapes as well as the vernacular artisan constructions that make up the village, bearing witness to the genius of the craftsmen who knew how to work with the ever-present relief of the terrain to build a housing stock necessarily dense due to the limited area of available land.

Mimmo Jodice is one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century and has gained international recognition around the world. A self-taught photographer born in 1934 in Naples, he began his artistic activity in the mid-1960s with visual experimentation and produced research into cutouts and collages of images, then in the 1970s shifted toward social critique related to the miserable living conditions of the population of the city of Naples, vibrant and popular, and in the 1980s toward a silent evocation of the metaphysical landscape and Mediterranean archaeology, with a creative language that reflects on time, light and the very act of seeing. In 1983-1984 Mimmo Jodice also participated in the project “Viaggio in Italia” with Luigi Ghirri and about ten other emerging Italian photographers of the time such as Guido Guidi, Mario Cresci, Olivo Barbieri, Vittore Fossati. Mimmo Jodice has presented his work in France on several occasions, notably within the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles, as well as at a retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2010, which led to the edition of an important catalogue. In 2016 the Museo MADRE in Naples dedicated a monumental exhibition to the entirety of his photographic work, and after his death in 2025 the city of Naples established a ceremonial chamber in his honor.
