The mask represents a human face, with the head often topped by a royal bonnet or a calotte (a small round cap covering the skull or the crown of the head). The eyelids are open, revealing glass eyes directed toward the viewer. The nose is prominent, of a size and shape relatively realistic. The lips are full, with the mouth slightly open and revealing the front teeth of the two jaws, and sometimes giving the impression of speaking or singing. The chin is often pointed. The ears are of normal size and position and, above all, well outlined; often painted with a red patina.
