Antique Orthodox icon depicting Saint George – Russia, 19th century
Ancient sacred icon of Orthodox tradition depicting Saint George, vener ated as martyr and warrior saint, shown facing forward in armor, sword and large shield, flanked by two saints in a prayerful posture. The original inscriptions in Cyrillic characters, now largely worn, identify the depicted figures.
The work is handmade using the traditional egg tempera on a gesso (levkas) ground on a wooden panel, in accordance with the canons of Russian icon painting. The composition stands out for the rich red and green tones, the elegant highlights, and the typic al stylization of the faces.
The panel preserves the original rear crossbars and presents an authentic patina that testifies to its devotional use over time.

Conditions
