Chokwe tshimbuya axe
Angola
Total length: 48 cm
Maximum width (blade and wood): 25 cm
Period: late 19th / very early 20th century
Provenance: Leiloeira Côrte Real auction house - Porto - Portugal
— Much more a scepter than an axe. Village chiefs, diviners and courtiers close to the court owned it, not worn on the shoulder like Congo herminettes, but held in the hands, the superb engravings on the wood and the blade clearly visible to all. It dates very surely from the very beginning of the 20th century, or even from the end of the 19th century. Its provenance is obviously excellent. The auction house is Portuguese, of which Angola was one of its colonies. It had probably never left Portugal before I acquired it.
