Description from the seller

Exceptional royal Ndop effigy of the Kuba Kingdom, Democratic Republic of the Congo. True idealized portraits of Kuba sovereigns, Ndops rank among the most emblematic masterpieces of classical African sculpture. More than a simple representation, each figure symbolically embodied the spiritual and political essence of the king, serving as a support for his memory and the dynastic continuity.

This sculpture immediately captivates with the extraordinary balance of its proportions and the quality of its execution. Seated in a posture of sovereign dignity, legs crossed with remarkable mastery of volume, the figure radiates an impression of calm, stability, and authority. The face, with heavy, meditative eyelids, expresses the ideal of restraint and wisdom sought in Kuba court art. The delicately carved eyebrow arches, the finely drawn lips, and the carefully modeled ears testify to particularly refined workmanship.

The decorative richness continues in the numerous geometric details: bracelets, base motifs, scarifications, and the emblem sculpted resting on the head, a true royal identifier. The deep, satin mahogany patina reveals many years of handling and enhances the wood’s natural qualities.

Of rare elegance, this effigy gathers all the characteristics that have made the Ndop internationally renowned: contained monumentality, formal perfection, and a strong spiritual presence. A high-quality sculpture, representative of one of the peaks of African court art, whose lines’ modernity and aesthetic sophistication continue to fascinate collectors, enthusiasts, and museum institutions around the world.
