Description from the seller

Important mask from the Tetela-Luba cultural complex, this striking work immediately impresses with the expressive power of its face and the dramatic tension in its composition. The narrow, deeply incised gaze, almost hypnotic, seems to pierce space with unusual intensity, while the protruding mouth and angular volumes reinforce the piece’s offensive and transcendent character.

The entire face is traversed by an extraordinary network of geometric scarifications, carved with remarkable mastery. These linear motifs, of great graphic sophistication, literally animate the surface of the mask and create a fascinating dialogue between shadow, light, and matter. The finely grid-patterned headdress, perfectly balanced with the facial volumes, testifies to a sculptural work that is particularly accomplished.

The character of this work reinforces its spiritual and symbolic dimension, evoking the passage between different worlds, the duality of invisible forces, and the mediation between the human and ancestral spheres. The deep, dark, nuanced patina reveals many years of ritual use and gives the object an almost magnetic presence.

Extremely communicative, aggressive in its expression yet of rare formal elegance, this mask ranks among the strongest and most refined productions of the Tetela-Luba stylistic corpus. A work of very high aesthetic level, blending geometric abstraction, ritual power, and exceptional sculptural modernity.
