Anthropomorphic mask - Binji Mbagani - DR Congo

Rare and ancient anthropomorphic mask from the Binji Mbagani cultural complex, carved by the Bana Kambulu and used by the Bana Nkuba in the region of Kasaï Occidental in central Congo

This mask presents a powerful aesthetic immediately recognizable by its taut volumes and its dramatic expression where every detail seems to participate in a ritual setting deeply rooted in local traditions

The domed forehead dominates an elongated face structured around a prominent triangular nose carved with remarkable economy of means. The narrow eyes slightly recessed under pronounced arches create a particular intensity, giving the gaze an almost hypnotic presence.

The open mouth with strongly projected contours enhances the expressive character of the work, evoking sacred speech, breath, or invocation. The lower part of the face ends in a long, finely striated point, reinforcing the verticality of the mask and its sculptural elegance

The top of the head is adorned with a central crest accompanied by small protrusions rhythmically lining the upper edge; these coiffural elements contribute to the visual identity characteristic of productions from this region of the Kasai

The surface features a deep, dark patina with satin reflections, bearing witness to authentic antiquity and prolonged ritual use
