AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A Greek Attic terracotta lekythos, decorated in the black-figure technique. The vessel sits upon a slightly concave, circular base and features a slightly tapered body with a narrow neck leading to a funnel-shaped mouth and a thick, flat rim. A single handle has been attached from the neck to the shoulder. The body of the vessel shows a tall draped figure, possibly the Greek god of wine and revelry, Dionysus holding a lyre, flanked by satyrs amid scrolling vines. A bird frames the scene on either side. The shoulder is decorated with radiating strokes, palmettes, with a band of meander below.

Provenance: From a private London collection; earlier circulating on the Netherlands art market in the 1980s.

Condition: Very good condition. Slight encrustation and signs of wear as consistent with age, such as minor pitting, chipping, indentations, and scratches. Loss of pigment. Evidence of repair throughout.

Dimensions: W 11cm x H 27cm
