"Cornelis Johannes (Kees) Maks (Amsterdam, August 22, 1876 - same place, October 28, 1967) was a Dutch painter. He signed his work as C.J. Maks.
Kees Maks was a pupil of George Hendrik Breitner. He is regarded as one of the most important modern, figurative artists of the early 20th century. While in the first quarter of the 20th century avant-garde painting was making its influence felt in Europe, many artists in the interwar period returned to a more neo-classical figurative style, known as retour à l’ordre. In Paris, in particular, these figurative artists, including Kees van Dongen, gained fame.
Kees Maks, who regularly traveled to Paris for short periods to paint there, made a name with his paintings of the fashionable nightlife: circus performances, dancing couples, strolling groups and garden parties were topics previously unknown in Dutch art. The lively subjects and the frivolous way of painting, in which the artist formed bold color fields with bright, vivid colors, impressed the public. Together with Kees van Dongen and Jan Sluijters, Maks caused a stir with his works because of their modern character.
He is related to the Bergense School and the Hague School".
