Large oval centerpiece or “coupé à noix” in cobalt blue folded crystal, cut to transparent.
The piece presents a deep oval, boat-like shape, with the ends raised and an elegant wavy, festooned edge. The decoration is executed with a rich, complex carving, formed by large star medallions, radial rosettes, vertical fans, crisscross geometric motifs, and wide transparent bands that run across the body in overlapping curves.
The lower band is decorated with a succession of lanceolate or leaf-shaped motifs. The oval base incorporates a large 16-point radial star, carved directly in the transparent crystal.
The contrast between the outer cobalt blue layer and the transparent crystal produces an intense refraction of light and allows the depth and precision of the cuts to be appreciated.
Attribution: the combination of profile, color, finish and especially the decorative organization shows a strong proximity to Val Saint Lambert carving identified as HF 375 in specialized documentation. The overall form could also correspond to a variant of the body or blank VSL 2911/17, used with different cuts and dimensions. However, a catalog sheet reproducing exactly this combination of form and decoration has not yet been located.
Val Saint Lambert identification documentation cites the main criteria as pattern, shape, color and finish; it also shows that authentic pieces exist both signed and unsigned. On the page dedicated to pattern HF 375, there is a blue coupe with starry medallions, crossed bands and lower carving comparable to the present piece.
The piece has no visible signature or mark, so it is prudently offered as attributed to Val Saint Lambert, not as a fully certified piece.
