Rara Pair of Two-Light Wall Sconces in Golden Bronze – Elkington & Co. and Baccarat Crystal, Mid-19th Century 1848-1850
Extraordinary and rare pair of two-armed wall sconces dating to the mid-19th century (Victorian/Napoleon III era). This set represents an excellent and well-documented international collaboration between the prestigious English metallurgical manufactory Elkington & Co. and the legendary French crystal Baccarat.
Structure, Casting and Support: The light arms, of spectacular visual impact, are crafted in precious gilded bronze. The casting features masterful chasing and finely handcrafted details. The metal frame bears the original Birmingham company marks of Elkington & Co., including the numeric serial code "8" within a diamond outline that attests to manufacture circa 1848-1850. The arms are magnificently anchored to original wall mounts in dense noble wood (ebony/mahogany), entirely hand-carved with richly decorative period motifs perfectly preserved.
Crystal Components: Each sconce houses two tulip-shaped shades in fine lead crystal. The tulips display a complex and spectacular ground glass work that guarantees exceptional light refraction, enhanced by contrast with the gilded bronze and the dark wooden background.
Fundamental for authenticity and collectible value: all four glasses bear the factory circular stamp "Baccarat France", testimony to the contemporaneous integrity of the set.
