Edition signed on the front free endpaper by Gianni Berengo Gardin (1930 - 2025), unique and unavailable as a signed copy on the Internet. 210 pages and 76 black-and-white photographs printed in double pages, mostly on recto only and some as double spreads, texts in Italian by Giuliano Sergio, Michel Smangiarssi and Simona Turco. Solid publisher’s hardcover binding. In excellent condition, practically like new.

The photographs in this book were the subject of an exhibition at Casale di Santa Maria Nuova, Via Appia Antica, but they do not concern, not the rich artistic and archaeological heritage of Rome, but the daily life of the Romans (as well as tourists) and the monuments serve here only as a backdrop.

Born in Genoa, of Venetian origin, having spent his adolescence in Rome, Gianni Berengo Gardin settled in Milan in 1962 but he has always traveled widely in Italy and throughout Europe in particular. He spent a long period of his life in Venice, from where he was originally through his father, and it is in Venice that he began photographing in the late 1950s by joining the amateur photographic circle “La Gondola” with a few other photographers who would become famous, including Fulvio Roiter. Gianni Berengo Gardin is the most emblematic photographer of twentieth-century Italy. Always paying close attention to the human element, he photographed rural Italy where the work of peasants merged with the landscape, thus heralding the ecological movement. He is also the author of Venice of the Seasons and Tuscany, published in the 1960s by Guilde du Livre, the author with Carla Cerati of Morire di classe (Ref. Parr&Badger volume II p.246). Of major technical and artistic quality, his work is monumental: he photographed the interiors of dwellings across different social classes, Italians at work in various sectors, urban development especially on the outskirts of Milan, popular and religious celebrations in Italian towns and villages, the Roma of Florence or Palermo, the cooperative economy, not forgetting contemporary art and architecture. Finally he published about a dozen books on various European countries.
