Chartreuse Verte combines 130 herbs, flowers, roots, and spices, with beet alcohol as a base and white sugar for sweetness. It is bottled at 55% ABV and ages for at least three years in large French oak barrels.
Following the discovery of the mysterious manuscript containing the recipe for the elixir of long life, an early version of the elixir was produced in the Vauvert monastery in Paris until 1737. From then until 1864, the Elixir Vegetal was made in the pharmacy of the Grande Chartreuse monastery, where, in 1764, Father Jérôme Maubec defined the first recipe, adding sugar and lowering the alcohol content, working to achieve the green color. The Green Chartreuse as we know it today was born from the formula of 130 herbs in 1840.
