Baroque French Louis XIV Mirror in carved wood, polychromed and gilded with gold leaf – 66 × 41 cm

A piece of notable artistic quality and extraordinary presence, made in hand-carved wood, with remnants of polychromy and gold leaf, following the models of Hispano-colonial Baroque. The composition features an elegant pierced crest with floral decoration, abundant scrolls, vegetal motifs and small side mirrors that enrich the ensemble and give it a strong personality.

The first thing that draws attention is the depth of the carving. This is not superficial decoration but an authentic sculptural work made by hand, with very pronounced volumes, delicate ornamental details and a patina that only time can provide.

It preserves its old glass with the characteristic peripheral oxidation typical of historic mirrors, a trait highly valued by collectors as it reflects its age and authenticity. The small decorative mirrors likewise maintain that attractive appearance typical of old frontals.

The back is particularly interesting. It is constructed using traditional techniques, with old boards, manual joinery and completely artisanal execution. The reverse shows very careful workmanship, somewhat rare in later pieces and commonly found in high-quality mirrors made by master artisans.

The frame retains traces of its old gilding and original polychromy, with the natural wear that comes with centuries of use. That patina, together with small losses and signs of use, adds authenticity and is precisely one of the qualities most valued in this type of piece by collectors and specialists.

Condition

Good structural condition considering its age.

Shows wear typical of a piece with several centuries of history: occasional losses of gilding, small marks, craquelure and natural oxidation of the mirror. All of this is visible in the photographs and is consistent with an old work of these characteristics.

Observations

Because of its typology, construction technique, carving quality, polychromy and gilding, it may be attributed to the Hispano-colonial Baroque realm, probably between the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
