Description from the seller
An exceptionally impressive, large-format 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon, depicting Christ Acheiropoietos – “The Saviour Not Made by Hands.”
The sacred face of Christ is hand-painted on a substantial wooden panel and surrounded by a magnificent embossed brass oklad, richly decorated with floral ornaments, geometric borders and a dramatic radiating halo. Small angelic figures appear in the upper section, while the traditional Church Slavonic title “Spas Nerukotvorny” is embossed at the bottom.
With its imposing dimensions of 31 × 26 cm and substantial weight of approximately 920 g, this is a remarkably large and commanding devotional icon. The deeply worked metal covering, powerful frontal image and naturally aged golden patina give the piece an extraordinary presence and authentic historical character.
The reverse of the wooden panel retains an old handwritten inscription. The icon shows visible signs of considerable age and devotional use, including wear to the painted face, oxidation, dents, surface marks and losses or deformation to parts of the radiating halo. These imperfections have been preserved and form an important part of the icon’s history and antique character.
A highly decorative and spiritually expressive example of Russian Orthodox religious art, ideal for an important icon collection, historic interior or ecclesiastical display.
