Hemimorphite is a secondary mineral that forms in the alteration zone of lead and zinc sulfide ore deposits. The surface shows a typical botryoidal, grape-like habit (often described as bubbly), which reflects light giving it a splendid vitreous or waxy luster. The vibrant sky-blue or turquoise color is due to the presence of micro-inclusions of copper within its structure. Originating from the historic locality of Sa' Duchessa in Sardinia.
