Antique Black Forest cuckoo clock – richly carved wood – ca. 1880–1910
Beautifully executed antique Black Forest cuckoo clock, probably manufactured in Germany around the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century.
The clock features a richly carved wooden case with a traditional hunting-lodge style design. The front is elaborately decorated with large carved leaves and is crowned by a finely carved bird. The dark finish and natural patina emphasize the authentic, antique character of the clock.
The round dial is equipped with Roman numerals and decorative hands. Above the dial is the traditional door behind which the cuckoo appears.
Inside there is a mechanical brass movement with chain and weight drive. The clock is powered by two traditional pinecone-shaped weights. On either side of the movement are the two bellows that create the characteristic cuckoo call. Beneath the case hangs a carved leaf-shaped pendulum.
On the inside of the wooden back panel are several old handwritten maintenance and repair notes. Among others, the date 1975 is visible; this probably concerns a maintenance or repair date and not the clock’s year of manufacture.
