Fertility dolls or statuettes of the Ashanti people in Ghana, West Africa, are worn by women because these dolls are attributed with protective virtues, making the deities favorable; they promote the birth of beautiful and healthy children.

Typically, women, before marriage and during the entire pregnancy, place these dolls on their backs by wrapping them in their clothes, hence their flattened shape.

After the birth of the child, fertility dolls can be placed on altars.
