Spectacular Provençal mirror from the Louis XV period in carved and gilded wood - France, 18th century Exceptional wall mirror ("Miroir Provençal") made in wood lavishly hand-carved and gilded with fine gold leaf, characteristic of the high cabinetmaking of southern France during the eighteenth century. The mirror stands out for its magnificent pierced top pediment, described as a "bouquet garni", which represents an elegant basket or crest overflowing with vegetal motifs. The outer frame features a sinuous and dynamic Rococo silhouette, meticulously decorated with clusters of grapes, entwined vine leaves, and delicate rocaille elements. These fruity and natural motifs are the distinctive hallmark and most sought-after of the Provençal workshops of this period. The structure retains its lunette or small perimeter upper mirrors embedded, typical of French mirror architecture of the era, which multiply the reflections and the luminosity of the piece.
Condition: It shows an absolutely extraordinary and authentic antique patina. The original gold leaf gilding displays a natural, aesthetic wear that enhances its historical character. There are slight minor losses in the stucco and logical faults due to the passing centuries, visible in the images, that do not detract from the piece’s value. The central glass and the secondary glasses are antique, showing the classic and coveted atmospheric oxidation typical of antique mirrors.
