A North Indian ca. 12th‑century red sandstone relief titled Stela with Buddha, measuring 58 cm high by 18.5 cm wide by 12 cm deep, in good condition with original authenticity, acquired from a private collection in 2003 from the Netherlands.
Description from the seller
This significant 12th-century red sandstone relief from North India represents the accomplished stone-carving traditions of medieval South Asian Buddhist art, depicting a rare double-seated Buddha composition surrounded by attendant and celestial figures rendered in deep, elaborately worked relief. Such multi-figure devotional panels were produced as architectural or votive elements within the religious monuments of the Indian subcontinent, and their survival as fragments offers valuable insight into the iconographic programs of the period.
Measurments: The piece is substantial in scale at 58 cm in height and 28.6 kg in weight, lending it considerable physical presence and collectible gravitas.
The condition is good for a fragment of this age, with only minor surface chips and losses consistent with natural aging—notably, the piece carries no restoration or repairs of any kind, preserving its full archaeological integrity.
Sourced from a private collection, this is a highly collectible and a good example of medieval Indian Buddhist sculpture.
NOTE: Due to the net weight of the item (28.6 kg net), this item will be shipped through FedEx/DHL or other similar shipping services or sources against a flat shipping cost of 250 euros for all countries except the local destinations (within the Netherlands, through local courier service, the flat shipping cost is 65 euros).
