Figurine - Chinese Shiwan Figure of LIBAI - Earthenware

A finely modelled Chinese Shiwan pottery figure of the celebrated Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai (701–762), dating to the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). Li Bai, honoured as the “Immortal Poet” (Shixian), is one of the greatest and most influential figures in Chinese literary and cultural history. For over a thousand years, his poetry has been admired throughout China, and he remains a lasting symbol of artistic genius, scholarly refinement and the free spirit of the Chinese literati.

Li Bai was also renowned for his love of wine, a theme frequently celebrated in both his poetry and traditional Chinese art. In this expressive Shiwan figure, he is portrayed seated in a relaxed pose, holding a wine cup beside a wine vessel, an iconic representation reflecting his legendary character and enduring cultural legacy. The figure is decorated with rich aubergine, green, blue and cream lead glazes, displaying the lively modelling and vibrant colours for which Shiwan pottery from Guangdong Province is internationally admired.

More than a decorative object, this figure pays tribute to one of China’s greatest cultural icons. Li Bai’s image has long represented wisdom, literary excellence, optimism and the appreciation of life’s simple pleasures, making him one of the most beloved figures in Chinese culture.
