Mallorcan Crucified Christ in carved wood - Spanish School - 18th Century
Description: Magnificent altar crucifix with the figure of Christ dead on the cross (Christus patiens), characteristic of Mallorca's religious and devotional imagery (Balearic Islands, Spain). The main carving of the torso and face denotes the characteristics of the 18th‑century Baroque school, highlighting the strong expressiveness of the face with the mouth slightly open (with detail of the upper teeth carved), the bifurcated beard and the wavy locks of hair carved with a gouge. It preserves very honest remnants of its original polychromy, with traces of blood on the forehead and temples. The loincloth (perizonium) presents a thick drapery with a clearly defined lateral knot. The ebony-stained wooden cross and its stepped base are later additions (20th century), made for the display of the older sculpture.
Condition: Overall condition typical of its advanced age with natural wear, losses of the stucco layer and polychromy, and biological structural cracks in the wood over time (notably an old vertical crack in the torso). It shows a recognizable historical restoration in its left arm (right as seen from the front), which was replaced and integrated about 50 years ago. The figure is firmly anchored to the cross structure by modern metal fasteners (star and flat), installed during recent consolidation work. Hands and feet complete.
