Rare original edition of this book published in 1973 by the Institute of Art History of the University of Parma. 250 pages and 247 black-and-white photographs. This book includes 100 pages of a very important interview with Ugo Mulas concerning both his personal journey and his artistic path, as well as a text by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle. It highlights not only the work on artists but also all aspects of Ugo Mulas's photographic oeuvre, including his early reportage. As a photojournalist, the book is in good overall condition with some age- and use-related wear.

Ugo Mulas (1928–1973) lived in Milan from 1948, working as a teacher to fund his studies, and began frequenting the Jamaica bar on Via Brera next to the Academy of Fine Arts, which was frequented by Italian and foreign artists and intellectuals. He then began photographing post-war Milan, the snowy suburbs, the waiting room of the station where the homeless sought refuge. In 1954 he produced his first reportage at the Venice Biennale, where he had gone with Mario Dondero, and it was then that his preferred relationship with the artistic world began, despite his growing success in fashion, advertising, and theatre.

The encounter with Pop Art present at the Venice Biennale in 1964 prompted Ugo Mulas to travel to the United States, where he would return several times in 1965 and 1967, photographing most of the emerging artists of that era. This allowed him to publish in 1967 his now-famous book “New York, the New Art Scene” (Holt, Rinehart and Winston publisher) and to present the exhibition on the same theme. In 1970 a serious illness reduced his activity, which continued until his death in 1973.
