(*) Andrew Warhola (Pittsburgh; August 6, 1928 – New York; February 22, 1987), commonly known as Andy Warhol, was an American visual artist and filmmaker who played a crucial role in the birth and development of pop art. After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained worldwide fame for his work in painting, avant-garde cinema, and literature, a notoriety backed by an adept relationship with the media and by his role as a guru of modernity. Warhol acted as a link between artists and intellectuals, but also between aristocrats, homosexuals, Hollywood celebrities, drug addicts, models, bohemians, and picturesque urban characters. Among his influences: Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Truman Capote, Ben Shahn, Tom of Finland, or Jack Smith.
Warhol used different media to create his works, such as hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, serigraphy, sculpture, cinema, and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, contains a wide permanent collection of art. It stands as the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.
He was a controversial figure during his life — some critics labeled his works as pretentious or heavy-handed jokes — and since his death in 1987 he has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, analyses, books, and documentaries. Beyond fame and controversy, he is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century due to his revolutionary works.
