This English-language photography book presents 101 selected images from “The Last Sitting,” the historic 1962 series photographed by Bert Stern with Marilyn Monroe.
Commissioned by Vogue, the sessions took place over three days and captured Monroe approximately six weeks before her death.
The book ranges from bold and uninhibited portraits to fashion photographs using translucent fabric and jewellery, as well as more intimate images that reveal subtle changes in expression.
Together, the photographs create a striking contrast between Monroe’s glamorous public presence and the vulnerability of the woman behind the celebrated image.
The large-format presentation allows the reader to appreciate the composition, lighting, colour and atmosphere of Stern’s photographs in detail.
It is an impressive collaboration between one of the defining cultural figures of the twentieth century and a photographer widely associated with advertising, fashion and portrait photography.
This English edition was published by Schirmer Art Books in 1993.
There are fine scratches and light marks.
